Limits & exclusions

What commercial auto insurance may not cover

A commercial vehicle policy does not automatically insure every item in the vehicle or every type of business loss. Confirm the following separately.

Goods, tools & equipment

Cargo, tools and customer goods may require separate property, cargo or inland marine protection; vehicle damage coverage does not necessarily cover them.

Incorrect use or drivers

Undisclosed delivery, hauling, business use, drivers or territory can create coverage problems. Confirm classifications and restrictions.

Business interruption & liability gaps

Lost revenue, contractual penalties, employee injuries and business-premises liability generally require separate consideration.

Frequently asked questions

Commercial auto insurance questions, answered

What counts as a commercial vehicle in BC?

Vehicles used to deliver or carry goods for business can be commercial vehicles. Other paid professional uses may have different classifications. Confirm your exact vehicle use with an ICBC broker.

Can I use my personal vehicle for business?

Some business uses may be allowed under an appropriate vehicle classification, but delivery, hauling or other activities can require a different rate class. Tell your broker how the vehicle is used.

What does ICBC Basic insurance provide?

ICBC Basic insurance is required for BC vehicles and includes mandatory protections under applicable rules. Optional collision, comprehensive and higher liability limits should be reviewed separately.

Is collision or comprehensive included automatically?

No. Collision and comprehensive or specified-perils protection are optional and depend on the policy selected, eligibility, deductibles and exclusions.

When is a business eligible for an ICBC Fleet Plan?

Western Coast describes fleet arrangements for businesses with five or more qualifying vehicles. Its source page states that enrolment rules differ for fleets of five to nineteen versus twenty or more vehicles; confirm current ICBC requirements.

Are tools or goods inside my van insured?

Not necessarily. Tools, equipment, cargo and customer goods may need separate coverage. Ask your broker about limits and property in transit.

What affects commercial auto insurance premiums?

Vehicle type, use, location, drivers, claims history, operating territory, coverage choices and fleet experience may influence premiums.

What details do I need for a commercial auto quote?

Have your business information, vehicle registration and specifications, number of vehicles, driver details, use, routes, claims history and current coverage ready.

Does submitting the business quote form activate vehicle insurance?

No. The online form starts a request. A broker must confirm the correct ICBC or insurer process, terms, payment and effective date before coverage begins.
