Farm Insurance
Farm insurance is a specialized type of coverage designed to protect farmers, ranchers, and agricultural operations from financial loss due to unexpected events.
A standard farm insurance policy in BC can cover:
- Farm dwellings and personal property
- Outbuildings and barns
- Farm equipment and machinery
- Livestock
- Crops (optional or through separate programs)
- Liability protection (for bodily injury or property damage)
Farm insurance typically covers key assets such as your home (dwelling), outbuildings, machinery, grain bins, produce, livestock, and liability. In addition, you can customize your policy with a wide range of optional coverages to protect other valuable items like ATVs, irrigation systems, loss of use, and farm contents.
Basic coverage starts with fire and lightning and can also include wind, hail, collapse due to snow load, and impact by land vehicle.
Replacement cost can be added to the farm building depending on year of construction and condition.
Additional coverages to consider adding or extending include:
Fire
Firefighting Expense coverage is a key component that should be included in any farm insurance policy. Some insurers provide a set limit within the standard policy, while others require it to be added separately. It's important to review these limits regularly to ensure they are adequate for today’s costs and reflect the actual fees charged by local fire departments.
Hail
Hail Insurance is not annually renewed. Hail insurance providers release their rates at the appropriate time, after which clients can secure coverage—either starting from the release date or once their crops have reached a visible stage of growth. Coverage starts at noon the next day after purchase. A hail insurance policy offers protection against hail loss to growing crops, shatter loss by hail in swath (limited to crop types) and fire loss (typically) until the date of expiry.
Flood
Most farm insurance providers offer some level of flood coverage for dwellings, which typically includes protection against sewer backup. However, just like standard homeowner policies, there are exclusions to flood coverage that clients should be aware of. Livestock and machinery may also be protected against flood damage if they’re included under an all-risk coverage option.
