Motorcycle insurance, made clearer

Start with the essentials.
Build coverage around your bike.

Motorcycle insurance in British Columbia starts with mandatory ICBC Basic Autoplan for road use. Optional insurance adds protection such as collision, theft and higher liability limits. Western Coast helps you understand how these pieces work together, whether you are buying your first bike or reviewing an experienced rider’s policy.

A commuter in Vancouver, a touring rider heading up Vancouver Island and an owner storing a bike for winter can have very different needs. We review your motorcycle, licence experience, riding plans and storage arrangements, then explain the available ICBC and private optional choices. You can compare the protection as well as the price.

Understand your protection

What does motorcycle insurance cover in BC?

Your protection may combine mandatory ICBC insurance with optional coverages from ICBC or an eligible private insurer. Western Coast helps you check the limits, deductibles and settlement terms for each part.

Basic Autoplan is the starting point. It does not replace collision or comprehensive protection for your motorcycle. Check what would pay for your own bike after an at-fault crash, theft or fire.

Riding and storing in British Columbia

Ready for BC roads. Prepared for time off them.

Coastal weather, seasonal riding and trips beyond your usual routes bring different questions. Review these details before the next ride or the next change to your policy.

Seasonal riding & storage

A parked motorcycle can still be stolen or damaged. Some optional products provide storage benefits, while other arrangements need a separate policy or change. Confirm the dates, location and conditions before ending road-use insurance.

Ask your broker

“What stays insured in storage, and what must I do before riding again?”

Theft, weather & parking

Where you keep your motorcycle matters. Review comprehensive protection for losses such as theft, fire or storm damage, and disclose shared garages, outdoor parking and any security devices.

Ask your broker

“What protection applies where I park, and what limits or security conditions should I know?”

Touring & cross-border trips

A weekend on the Island and a longer ride into the United States can call for different planning. Review your liability limit, coverage territory, roadside arrangements and separate travel medical insurance.

Ask your broker

“Does each policy cover my route, and what support is available if my motorcycle cannot continue?”

What should I not assume is covered?

Motorcycle insurance is not a maintenance warranty. Normal wear and mechanical breakdown are generally excluded. Racing, track use, delivery work, undeclared modifications and riding outside licence conditions can affect coverage. Tell your broker before these activities or changes begin. Storage-only protection does not authorize road use.

Costs & potential savings

Where can I compare motorcycle insurance quotes in BC?

Western Coast can help you arrange ICBC Basic Autoplan and compare available optional motorcycle insurance. Start with our motorcycle quote request form, call 1-888-517-7171 or visit a local broker. We compare relevant limits, deductibles, insured value and extra benefits. Private-policy eligibility depends on the rider, motorcycle and insurer; your mandatory Basic coverage remains with ICBC.

Is motorcycle insurance mandatory in British Columbia?

Yes. A motorcycle used on public roads in BC must have the required registration, licensing and ICBC Basic Autoplan insurance. Western Coast can help you arrange the insurance and review optional protection for the bike. Collision, comprehensive and higher liability limits are separate choices; financing may create additional requirements. Confirm coverage is active before riding.

Can I buy private motorcycle insurance instead of ICBC?

Private insurance can provide eligible optional coverage, but it does not replace mandatory ICBC Basic Autoplan for a BC road motorcycle. Western Coast helps you compare available private options with ICBC optional protection and explains how they work with Basic. The best fit depends on your bike, riding history, coverage needs and the terms offered by each insurer.

What does ICBC Basic cover for a motorcycle?

ICBC Basic includes third-party liability and Basic Vehicle Damage coverage for qualifying crashes in BC, to the extent another driver is responsible. Enhanced Care provides eligible injury recovery benefits for BC residents, including motorcycle riders, regardless of responsibility. Western Coast can explain the limits and conditions. Basic does not replace optional collision protection for at-fault damage to your motorcycle or comprehensive protection against theft and other insured non-collision losses.

How much does motorcycle insurance cost in BC?

Western Coast can provide a relevant quote using your motorcycle and rider details. Cost can depend on the bike’s model, engine size and insured value, your licence and claims history, where and how you ride, the coverage period and optional protection. Compare the combined Basic and optional cost, deductibles, settlement terms and any payment fees. There is no single price that fits every BC rider.

How can I get cheaper motorcycle insurance without losing important protection?

Ask Western Coast to compare eligible optional policies with similar protection. Review manageable deductibles and any available discounts for experience, claims history, qualifying training or riding-club membership. Plan storage coverage before changing a seasonal policy. Keep your motorcycle’s value realistic, and compare annual costs and fees. ICBC’s distance-based discounts exclude motorcycle rate classes; private insurers have their own rules.

Can new riders or riders with a learner’s licence get insurance?

Contact Western Coast with your licence class, restrictions and riding experience so we can review available options. Do not assume that an experienced-rider requirement for one private product applies to every motorcycle insurance option. Some optional insurers require a minimum licence history or claims-free period. Insurance does not remove the need to follow your licence restrictions and the rules for operating the motorcycle.

Do I need motorcycle insurance while my bike is in storage?

A stored bike can still suffer theft, fire or other damage. Ask Western Coast about suitable protection for the storage location and period, including any lender requirements. Some optional policies include a storage arrangement; others require a separate policy or change. Confirm what remains covered before cancelling road-use insurance. Do not assume your home or tenant policy insures the motorcycle itself.

Can I insure my motorcycle only for the riding season?

Western Coast can help review the insurance term and available seasonal arrangements for your riding plans. Compare the total cost, cancellation terms and protection during storage, rather than assuming a shorter riding period produces a proportional saving. Before returning to the road, confirm that the necessary road-use coverage and licensing are active. A storage policy alone does not permit road riding.

What is the difference between collision and comprehensive motorcycle insurance?

Collision addresses insured damage to your motorcycle from a crash, including when you are responsible. Comprehensive addresses insured non-collision events such as theft, vandalism and fire. Each has its own terms and deductible. Western Coast can help you compare both and consider the bike’s value, financing requirements and what you could afford to replace yourself. Buying one does not automatically include the other.

Does motorcycle insurance cover theft?

Theft is generally a covered event under comprehensive motorcycle insurance, subject to the policy’s conditions and deductible. ICBC Basic alone does not provide this protection for your bike. Western Coast can help review available comprehensive or storage coverage and any requirements concerning parking, security and keys. Accessories, helmets and other belongings may have different limits, so ask how each is insured.

Is hit-and-run damage to my motorcycle covered?

Do not assume Basic Vehicle Damage coverage pays for damage caused by an unidentified driver. ICBC Collision includes hit-and-run protection, subject to its terms; other coverage arrangements can differ. Western Coast can help you check what applies to your motorcycle, the deductible and reporting requirements. Report an incident promptly to the relevant insurer and follow any police-reporting instructions.

Are my helmet and riding gear covered?

Some motorcycle coverages include protection for eligible riding gear after a covered event, but the limit and trigger vary. Western Coast can check helmets, jackets, gloves, boots and other equipment against the policy wording. Ask about total and per-item limits, depreciation and whether theft is treated differently from crash damage. Keep receipts and do not assume every policy includes the same allowance.

Does insurance cover custom parts and motorcycle accessories?

Tell Western Coast about modifications and accessories before relying on coverage. Luggage systems, custom paint, performance changes and other equipment may affect the motorcycle’s value or eligibility. Ask what must be declared, whether extra coverage is available and what limits apply. Keep receipts and photographs. The cost of a modification does not automatically become an insured amount.

Will my motorcycle be replaced if it is written off?

That depends on the policy’s settlement terms. Western Coast can explain actual cash value, declared value and any available replacement-cost protection. Declaring a value does not necessarily guarantee that amount will be paid; for example, ICBC own-damage total-loss settlements use the lesser of actual cash value and declared value, before the deductible. Replacement-cost options have separate eligibility and conditions.

Does my motorcycle insurance cover trips outside BC?

Tell Western Coast where you plan to ride and for how long. ICBC Basic applies in Canada and the United States, subject to its terms; check the territory and conditions of each optional policy separately. Review liability limits, roadside assistance and claims contacts before travelling. Motorcycle insurance is not a substitute for a separate review of travel medical coverage.

Am I covered if I carry a passenger or lend my motorcycle?

Ask Western Coast before changing who rides or how the motorcycle is used. The rider must hold the appropriate valid licence and comply with its restrictions. Private policies may have rider eligibility or other conditions, and passenger-related questions should be reviewed against the applicable coverage. Permission to borrow the motorcycle does not by itself confirm every part of the insurance will respond.

Does commuting or using my motorcycle for deliveries affect insurance?

Yes, how you use the motorcycle can affect the coverage and rating it needs. Tell Western Coast if you commute to work or school, use the bike for business or plan delivery work. Do not rely on a pleasure-use description for different activities. We can help confirm the correct use with the insurer before you make the change.

Is a financed motorcycle required to have collision and comprehensive coverage?

A lender may require collision and comprehensive coverage, specified deductibles and its interest recorded on the policy. Western Coast can review the insurance requirements in your financing agreement and explain the available options. This is separate from the legal requirement for ICBC Basic road-use insurance. Check with your lender before reducing coverage or moving the bike into storage.

Does road motorcycle insurance cover a dirt bike or off-road riding?

Coverage for a road motorcycle should not be assumed to fit a dirt bike, off-road vehicle or track activity. Tell Western Coast the exact type of motorcycle and where you plan to ride, including trails, public roads or events. Registration and insurance requirements can differ, and a separate product may be needed. Racing and track use require specific discussion with your broker.

Can I get a motorcycle quote online and start riding immediately?

You can submit Western Coast’s motorcycle insurance form online to request a callback. An insurance expert will gather the details needed to review your options. The form is not an instant final quote and does not activate coverage. If your purchase or first ride is soon, call 1-888-517-7171 during business hours and confirm your policy and effective date before riding.

What should I do after a motorcycle accident or theft?

Make sure everyone is safe and contact emergency services when needed. Report the incident promptly to the appropriate insurer; Western Coast can help identify the claims contact if you have both ICBC and private coverage. Record the relevant details, take photographs when safe and keep receipts. For theft, contact police and retain the report number. Your insurer assesses coverage and settlement under the policy.
