Wearable fitness trackers on the rise as a work out trend

September 21, 2020

Sept. 21, 2020. The wearable fitness technology market has been increasing steadily and wearable fitness technology is not just for athletes anymore, but also for people with health concerns or those dedicated to fitness. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, wearable technology is set to become the top trend in fitness in 2020. A study by Allied Market Research found that by 2023 the global market for wearable fitness trackers will reach $62.128 million. Revenue from health and fitness apps continues to grow.

What are wearable fitness trackers?

Wearable fitness trackers are high-tech devices you can wear on your body to collect health and fitness data which is then transmitted to an app so you can track your progress.

Benefits of wearable fitness trackers

There are many benefits of using wearable fitness trackers to monitor your fitness and health.

  • Advances in technology have made it easier than ever to collect health data.
  • Wearable fitness trackers are becoming more affordable.
  • Wearable tech can collect data that can be useful for your doctor or trainer to help you achieve your health goals.
  • Once you find an app that works for you, chances are you will stick with it. According to Flurry, health and fitness apps have the highest user retention rate of all apps.

What can you use a wearable fitness tracker for?

Wearable fitness trackers have many applications in the health and fitness field, such as:

  • Tracking heart rate, exercise, and calorie consumption.
  • Tracking sleep quality.
  • Making your lifestyle healthier.
  • Improving exercise efficiency.
  • Managing chronic disease.

Who uses wearable fitness trackers?

A Gallup report shows that wearable fitness tech is popular across income and gender lines. Wearable fitness trackers are more popular in upper-income households, where about half of adults are users. Trackers are more popular with women than men and people under 55 are more likely to use them.

Types of wearable fitness trackers

As popularity of wearable fitness trackers continues to increase, so does the range of options that are available. Wrist activity trackers and high-tech workout wear are two of the most popular types.

Wrist activity trackers and watches

Wrist activity trackers are the most popular form of wearable fitness technology and can be used to monitor your heart rate, monitor your sleep quality, track steps taken and calories burned and some come with GPS. The daily goals can be adjusted based on your fitness goals. Wrist activity trackers can be their own device or part of a smart watch.

High-tech workout wear

Semiconductor technology makes it possible to create T-shirts and sports bras that can read your heart rate, recovery rate, calories burned and distance travelled. The information can then be transmitted to an app and the clothing washed in the washing machine like your regular workout gear.

There are even compression suits that give feedback on your form, which can be a worthwhile investment for competitive athletes or anyone else who is serious about their fitness.

You can even monitor how far you run and your form with specialized socks.
